Witham crash victim dies from injuries
A man has died in hospital from serious head injuries after a car crash in Essex.

The 33-year-old victim from Witham was a passenger in a private hire vehicle travelling along Braintree Road in the early hours.

Police said he was found lying in the road after the Kia people carrier was involved in a collision.

The victim, who has not been formally identified, was taken to hospital where he died a short while after arriving.

The driver of the private hire vehicle, a 34-year-old man from Chelmsford, was uninjured and did not require medical treatment.

The road was closed for around five hours while officers investigated the scene.

It's probable that the passenger was not wearing a seat belt & if not, you have to ask why!!!

You can't make them wear one.

I do . . . . I tell them it's the law now in black cabs.

Then I tell them a little fib . . . that the police are having a purge & stopping cabs when they notice passengers not wearing seat belts & lecturing them.

99.9% of the time it does the trick!

But what I hate the most is when they sit on the very edge of the seat to get as near to you as they can to have a conversation. That spooks me, because any sudden braking & they're off their seat & on the floor. And as you well know that's the cabbie's fault. So in those cases it prompts the 'seat belt rhetoric' very early in the journey if I've forgotten it at the beginning.

Police probe man's taxi death

Police are investigating the death of a taxi passenger who suffered fatal head injuries in an horrific accident.

The 33-year-old died in Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, in the early hours of yesterday, and police are now trying to piece together the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

Officers said the dead man, who has yet to be formally identified, was a passenger in a beige Kia Sedona taxi.

There then appeared to be some sort of accident in Braintree Road at around 12.50am. No other vehicles were involved, and it is thought one line of inquiry is that the man fell out of the vehicle.

The injured man was lying in the road when emergency services arrived at the scene. Braintree Road was closed for five hours while an investigation into the cause of the tragedy was carried out.

There is not thought to have been any form of collision, but police have been unable to release further details.

The taxi driver, a 34-year-old man from Chelmsford, was uninjured and did not require hospital treatment.

The tragedy came on the same day that two other men were seriously injured in accidents elsewhere in Essex.

In Colchester, a man believed to be in his forties was walking in Harwich Road at the junction with Alderton Road when he was in collision with a silver Mercedes at 12.53am yesterday.

He was taken to Colchester General Hospital with serious injuries.

And a teenager was seriously injured when his car left the road and landed on its roof in Clacton.

The 19-year-old, from the Clacton area, was driving a red Ford Fiesta in the town's Holland Road when the crash happened at 2.25am yesterday.

He was cut free from the wreckage by firefighters and taken to Colchester Hospital.

Anyone with information about the Colchester accident is asked to contact Stanway Road Policing Unit and witnesses to the Witham fatality should call Dunmow Road Policing Unit.

I take it you never work late at night once they're the worse for drink they either cannot or will not wear them !

I hope this passenger pre- booked his mini cab

I usually work Friday & Saturday nights, sometimes from 9.00pm 'til 7.00am & I don't get many refusing to put their belts on.

Besides, if they refuse to put the belt on it's an indicator that they may be getting ready to do a runner (extra time needed to take seat belt off before running) & in that case it's MUF anyway.

I never have a problem getting people to wear their seatbelts even the inbred understand that the car ain't moving until they put them on

Just ahead of him is a guy dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans.

Saint Peter addresses this guy, "Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?"

The guy replies, "I'm Joe Green, taxi-driver, of New York City."

Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi-driver, "Take this silken robe and golden staff, and enter into the Kingdom."

So the taxi-driver goes into Heaven with his robe and staff.

And now the clergy person is at the first of the line.

The cleric stands erect and, without being asked, proclaims, "I am Joseph Snow, head pastor of Saint Mary's for the last forty-three years."

Saint Peter consults his list. Looking up, he says to the cleric, "Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven."

"Just a minute," says the clergy person. "That man was a taxi-driver, and you issued him a silken robe and golden staff; but I get wood and cotton. How can this be?"

"Up here, we work by results," says Saint Peter. "While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed.
