 Post subject: My Worst Day-Shift Ever.

I know this is the Easter Holidays, but today, without a shadow of a doubt, was my worst day shift ever. Eight and a half hours, to earn less than the guy that works in the coop at the end of my road.


Can it get any worse?

I am sure you are right, but that would be down to the trade not taking control of its own affairs. Things are bad now, and they're going to get a hell of a lot worse when new government steps in. :shock:


Surely, you can't expect drivers, to continue paying hiked rentals and plate premiums just to have a job. It's every man for himself Mr. T. No one should be granted a privileged existence. Unfettered access to the tools of their trade and only the strong will survive, a level playing field no less.

Drivers are fighting this recession with one hand tied behind their backs.

Listen bright boy. I've watched this trade being sold down the river by vested interests for nigh on 20 years. The drivers are the ones who are propping this trade up. Not the pretendy business types that bought in so they could blow to everyone on holiday, they were businessmen.

It's time for a reality check Dug, if you can't survive by single shifting then it's down the plug hole you go. No more unrealistic expectations of what can be earned by screwing the driver, just you and your own ass in the saddle.

It is not a moral system, and luckily enough, we didn't create it. We only played by its rules.

The trade has lost in the region of 30-40% of hires in the last 10 years. While trade "representatives" focused on drivers rentals and plate “values”, the punters have been voting with their feet. Ph and other transport groups are picking over our bones and still the vested interests pretend it's not happening.

You can't expect drivers to pay hike rentals, and inflated plate premiums to compensate for a depreciating market with diminishing returns, forever. Something has to give.

How much did you spend on fuel......did you thank jaspar when you went to the pumps.....knowing he'd objected to fares going up......while watching the pump price go up 10p per litre this past few weeks?

You have some points here gary,
But to delimit would not solve anything, It would just change the reasons for it being bad.

The limit should stay but the whole licence plate system needs replacing.
Plates need to be linked to the taxi drivers licence (Individuals not companies) and to hold a plate you need to be working it as your full time occupation. And no-one needs more than one.

Drivers are walking at an alarming rate at the moment. Nearly all the bus drivers I knew from my former work that had moved to taxis have now gone back to the buses again.
I know one guy that has left to stack shelves at asda because it is better money!

The owners are going to be in for a shock soon, because there is just not going to be willing people to rent their vehicles at all!

I have my own vehicle, but I was out on friday night for eight hours (7pm to 3am) and only took £110. If I was a driver and was paying £70 for a friday night (Not uncommon) then after my fuel which was £22, I would have been left with £18 in my pocket. That is just not sustainable.

The Edinburgh taxi trade now earns money for radio companies and plate holders, but there is nothing left for the actual drivers.

If you did delimit now, it would not make things worse for the drivers at all!

And gary, before you say "oh you will lose your plate value Frank" I will take that, mine is paid off anyway.
I work full time nights and I would rather have to work to earn money into the future than sit on my back side wondering how I am going to rent out a motor no-one wants. It makes financial sense.

I have a dayshift driver and have recently had to give him extra shifts at no cost, just to keep him on board.

And if anyone is out there saying "Oh its just the time of year" NO ITS NOT!

Since I began in Edinburgh Taxis, nearly 20 years ago, the amount of taxis and phc (all together) has risen by almost 100%.

With those sort of figures no one wins! Not phc, Not taxis, Not any individual company, NO ONE.

It is at the point now that for a driver, delimiting would mean less fares but with his own motor he could reduce costs a little.
I believe that we have reached the point where these would balance each other out.
It would not mean the driver would earn more, but I dont think he would earn less either.

A while back, if the cap was removed it WOULD have meant a financial loss to a driver, but not now.

If drivers start asking the council for the cap to be dropped, and I dont think that is so far fetched if things stay like this, then how long do you think the council will hold out?

How long will a jockey stay if he has to hand over 60% of his take, I can see many jockeys jumping ship and leaving the owner to work themselves
Now correct me if im wrong the average weekly rent is around £350 plus fuel say going by the mpg of a tx, that will be around £100 so a driver has to make that before he starts making a wage
Now if that driver had his own cab he could theoretically save around £200 extra per week for himself after paying his HP and insurance
