Received this request from a student actually doing some work.

Alex

Good day
I am writing an essay for a coures on the history of transport from York university.
Can you tell me or tell me where I can find the following please:
* the average annual mileage of a taxi in the UK?
* the average working life of a taxi with it's first owner and in total?
* If black cabs and cars have different figures it would be helful to find them.

Thank you

Alexander Taylor

In my urban area I would say;

Single shifted taxi 35,000 a year, double shifted 70,000.
Average working life of a London style cab 10 years with 2 or 3 owners.
Saloons 7 years.

In rural areas the mileage will vary from 50% more to 50% less.

Airport cabs will do loads more.

In other words there are 100s of different variants.

Ooh...a cynical...but possibly wise approach to questions bloodnock.

The question asked is also one that is difficult to answer, as sussex suggested. Some people appear to be doing "OK", but in many areas, the wheels just 'aint turning! (well...not enough, anyway :) )

My average is 50,000 single shifted, a return fare is a once in a blue moon affair, so nearly half that mileage is empty
Vehicles are a mix of saloons MPVs and hacks all have a 7 year 11 month age restriction but if you get it licenced a month before that restriction you can get a fresh 3 year licence

I don't think he'd believe me if I told him  I'm sure he'd rather I declared it all as income miles, but, perhaps he won't ask me this year
