Taxi driver could lose licence for doorstep assault

A taxi driver is facing losing his cab licence after an unprovoked attack on a man. Steven Thornton, 23, rained blows on someone who he believed had almost collided with his car when it had his baby inside.

Thornton, of Muntjac Close, Eaton Socon, admitted assault and was ordered to carry out 50 hours of unpaid community work and pay his victim £100 compensation by magistrates at Huntingdon. Presiding magistrate Paul Carruthers told him: “This type of behaviour is incredibly stupid and just cannot be tolerated.”

Emma Duckett, prosecuting, said the victim had just arrived at home in St Neots when he saw a man running towards him but was unable to get the front door open in time and a rain of punches descended on him. The attack only ended when other people shouted and Thornton ran off.

Miss Duckett said Thornton, who was of previous good character, told police he had recognised the victim’s car as one which had been driven dangerously and had previously come close to colliding with his. He told police he decided to speak to the driver and had no intention of hitting him.

Jason Stevens, defending, said Thornton was a man of good character who had acted out of character by carrying out the assault. Thornton had been enjoying a day out with his girlfriend, he said, but they argued and then he saw the car which had almost hit his when he had his young baby inside. Mr Stevens said: “It is fair to say he must have seen red.”

He said the victim had received no visible injuries and that Thornton was “extremely remorseful”. Mr Stevens told the court Thornton worked six days a week as a taxi driver and faced having his badge taken away because of his conviction.

For punches to be thrown he must have really lost it it doesn't reflect well on the trade and it sounds as if the trade might be better off without him

PS sussex your geography is a bit out I doubt living in Eaton Socon he works in Cambridge more likely St Neots
