Agreed, that's dumb IMO.

LOL, here it plays out a little differently, "Customer" Eff off, swing oops thump from the security guard, customer, groan, didn't see that coming, coppers called, customer usually lights right up at this point, if he can get up, gets a free ride (and bed) and most likely the phone book across the ribs in the back cell a few times, commonly known as "contact counseling". Monday morning he fronts court and is a few $ out of pocket, meanwhile the (now ex) girlfriend he was trying to be the hero for on the rank Saturday night is already bumping his best (ex) mate.

That usually comes into the etire for Mondays court session.

Anyway, that's all a bit of banter, it's obviously not all perfect within our working model but it certainly has cleaned up a lot of nonsense and the cabbies absolutely love the secure ranks. My advice, based on our experience (make of that what you will) is cabbies have nothing to fear if it is well done, it has increased business for our cabbies but the cabbies should never be forced into checking ID, that should be done by someone with the physical and legal protection to do so, IMO outside the cab. Lobby your people to do it right.

all it needs is the riot cops van parked by the rank

result? everyones as quiet as a lamb

no need for "think tanks" or 20 staff at taxpayers expense

That would be at tax payers expense too. Apart from that

Everybody has to have ID here to get into the clubs etc so it would be no great shakes to have to produce it to get into the taxi. We don't have marshalls on the ranks here, but, we do have imported bobbies outside the small strip of clubs and around the food houses. Our night spots are very contained and close together so it's easy to police. We have CCTV police vans, several 'police taxis' ready for customers. We've been known to have the police dogs out and the mobile metal detectors at the doors of the clubs. Our downtown base has a doorman on it every weekend to keep the queued customers in check and to take booking details. With all this having been in place for several years here we still have our fair share of 'have ago heros' and no doubt always will but we do have a low incident record with regards to taxis and ph so I suppose it works.

who is funding the Altogether Safer Watford Campaign

so it took a new quango to decide to put council staff to man a rank when its not thier job, thats what the police are for

can you imagine the pay rate to get council staff to work till 4am?

then theres the data protection act, who will have access to the CCTV tapes? is the rank a "public place" - ive worked 1 that isnt, that has implications on the legality of filming, wait till Mr Jones is snogging Mrs Smith and Mrs Jones/Mr Smith dont know, then it will kick off, film a drunk who would probably be placid, watch him flare up, and if the 19 year old girl with no ID cant have a taxi and gets murdered walking home imagine the press reports

you couldnt make it up, typical council lunacy

I loved this....

Quote:
A taxi driver, who has held Three Rivers licence plates for the past 16 years, has been told he cannot transfer to Watford because he is too old.
Raymond Jukes, from Westlea Avenue, said his application was rejected because there is an upper age limit of 70. He is 70.

He said: “Watford have an age limit but Three Rivers don't. I'm a fit man and I want to work. I'm just going by the rules of the country that you should have a right to work and nobody should say you cannot work.”

Nah, I did French. I later went to night school to learn German and Italian. I have however had many sleeps since then and forgotten a fair bit of all of them

BTW Toots, ref having the cops van by the rank, thats already paid for, whereas 10 council officers on £18K would be newly created positions - £180K just for starters, add CCTC camcorders at 5 x £800 = £4000, council staff back at base to download+check the footage (3 posts at £15K), add the "safe havens" and £250K is soon spent

THEN the LA bumps up badge and plate charges year-on-year to pay for it as a justifiable cost

this will only apply to the rank

meanwhile, round the corner, in the street where 4 nightclubs kick out at 2am cops are throwing bodies into cabs not even checking to see if they can pay, or are even breathing..............
