Taxi driver admits kissing and touching passengers

A TAXI driver who was “trying his luck” when he kissed and touched female passengers he picked up in his cab in Woking has appeared in court. Zahid Ramzan, 43, of Goldsworth Park, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault at Guildford Crown Court on Wednesday (September 20).

The charges related to a pair of incidents in January and February this year, involving two female passengers Ramzan had picked up from Woking town centre.

Describing the first incident on January 29, which involved a 27-year-old woman, prosecutor Sarah Bramley said: “The Crown’s case is that with the first complainant there had been some conversation about how beautiful she was, and when she leant over from the passenger seat to pay, he then kissed her on the side of the mouth. “She asked him to stop and he then held her and kissed her.”

The second offence took place approximately three weeks later on February 21, when Ramzan targeted a 22-year-old customer. Miss Bramley said: “The second complainant sat in the front of the cab and there was a conversation between the two. “He put his hand on her inner thigh outside of her clothing. She told him to remove his hand and after a number of seconds he did in fact remove it."

Married father-of-five Ramzan has since been suspended by the Hackney Carriage Licensing Authority as a result of the charges and is relying on benefits to support his family.

Simon Gruchy, defending, said: “He has made a terrible mistake and he is very sorry for what he did. “He is going through a very bad time in his life and now he just wants to put it behind him and rebuild his marriage. “He won’t be going back to minicab driving, and he will make sure this never happens again.

“He has lost his job and, in the last six months, has been living off the state as best he can. “All he wants to do is get back to work and put this behind him. “There was no persistence involved in these incidents, it was a case of a man in his early 40s trying his luck and when the luck wasn’t there he stopped immediately.”

Ramzan now faces a possible ban from operating as a licensed minicab driver. Judge Michael Addison said: “Nothing I say should belittle this case. “He was a taxi driver and girls get into taxis all the time and do not expect for this to happen. “The fact that I have put the sentence back for a report to be prepared is no indication of what the sentence will be.”

Ramzan was released on unconditional bail and will return to court for sentencing on October 21.
