Taxi Driver Online

Last year our L.A. Introduced a requirement for all new requistration Hackney vehicles.
To be fitted with a swivel or Priority seat that must be of a certain manufacturer ???.

This happened after a so called consultation to the trade very one sided

The main concern with this type of seat that driver's consider Not fit for purpose is the saftey firstly The LA recommed purchasing a car with a High Nencap rating then insist we fit this seat that looks like i made it in me garage taking out the original air bag system for the seat.

We have letters from both Ford And Skoda saying dont do it and your waranty will be invalid

What if (god forbid) a swivel seat car has a really bad accident the passenger injuries leave him a cabbage for the rest of his life
And the driver is sued for taking out the airbag system on the seat.

My question is how many LA insist on the seat and any feedback on this situation

Right Trev, get Vosa involved, they can over ride any stupid council.
Go to your testing station and ask the tester to get in touch with them to come down and inspect the seats, let them see the letters

The council concerned is

EAST RIDING

To fit a swivel seat the front air bag has to be deactivated.

Is that a good thing for punters and drivers?

The car's warranty is also void as the front seats often have all types of electrics either in them or underneath them.

Has any swivel seat ever been tested by Thatcham?

In short only councils that have no idea about these things, yet go along on a PC crusade, mandate drivers to fit these bloody things.

The question I will ask however is what representation was made to councillors before the decision was made?

I think I would be writing to the licensing team... and the council's legal department.... I would be pointing out that through this condition of licence that has been imposed... it leaves you in the position of invalidating the factory guarantee on your vehicle while at the same time removing a major safety item and strongly places a question of whether your insurance would be valid due to the modification ...... and as this is through their actions... would they please supply you with a copy of their insurance that will cover mechanical defects relating to the car and personal injury cover for disabled passengers that you might be carrying. and also cover for able body people that might suffer injury due to the airbag being removed.... remind them they have a duty of care.

Seems about Right....A bunch of Meddling Voodoo LA Mischief makers thinking they no more about Passenger safety than Motor Manufacturers who spend billions on passenger safety research and development do....DOH!!!!

Worse still certain LAs wont plate £25K VW 9 seaters cos access to the back row is past a tipping seat, but LAs know best

what differance does it make that it Tips...once down it locks into place and if it is tipped up then its no worse than no seat being there at all......
