Probably a turbo problem.

I'm 40mpg round town, 50 on a decent run.

Mmmm this could be why there's a smell of fumes coming into the car??

ooooohhhh, 3.5? i had a 3ltr saloon, straight 6 with L-head (side exhaust valves) and SU carbs.....sob......

The 3 litre was a very under rated car,the V8 version was the one that most people remember.
I had a drive in a beautifull 3 litre a while back,that must be one of the smoothest and quietest engines ever made.When the starter turned you thought it was the car in front that was firing up and driving off was like being towed it was so quiet.
A trully excellent car and so much better because trhree litres were made before the involvement of British Leyland.Trully the last great Rover.

picnic tray in the dash, hidden radio, leather seats, once up to about 30 it was no slouch either!
