It's been mentioned numerous times before that an application for a NEW taxi licence in Edinburgh costs nearly £1,600.

However, was looking at the fees card and it's the same for a new PH licence as well?

How can they justify this and how do they get away with it?

The requirement is that overall the licensing regime must be self-financing. It is reasonable to expect new entrants to pay a bit more and renewing licencees pay that little bit less.
Stops some of the frivolous applications that we have experienced lately.

Market forces and all that - you takes your choice - to pay or not to pay - to apply or not to apply.

Simple really! Only new applicants think it unfair, existing licence holders think it is.

So you would consider the difference between £267 and £1,567 to be a little bit?

Which frivolous PH applications would that be then? What do you mean by frivolous?

Those fees don't represent market forces. More like a scam I would say.

Ah, another cartel [-(

Sussex this is ECC they on about, they can do anything they want and get away with it, its only the daft ones that pay
No new potential driver has taken the council to the ombudsman, they just love paying around £1300 more than they would with the next highest council fee

I never said that it was a little bit. I did say existing licence holders would pay a little bit less (meaning less than they would have otherwise - is what you misunderstood)

Frivolous applications are those made without the applicant having a genuine desire to invest in a business but trying to make a fast buck or destroy others by so applying.

I never said fees represent market forces. If you feel an investment in licence will give you a good enough return then you go for it. Market forces or your interpetation of them determine that return. Not a scam, more a deterrent to frivolity!

Cartel? Get real son!

Depends what you're taking as the benchmark, but surely the obvious comparison is the fee for new applications?

Anyway, you said that new applicants should pay a bit more, which is still utterly ridiculous with regard to £1,300 or so.

Did you miss the PH bit in what I've been saying?

How would they make a fast buck? Do you mean by being a better profiteer than you?

And if closed market you support wasn't in place you the actions you criticise wouldn't be possible, so surely it's just playing by your own rules?

 I think you're lacking in understanding of what constitutes market forces. In the real world at least. And if a plate was a genuine 'investment' you wouldn't be so touchy about anyone criticising the whole gig.

Anyway, surely the fees should bear some reflection to the costs involved?

The fees in question self-evidently don't.

Oh I'm totally familiar with the real world, Dad, and you're certainly miles away from it.
