Taxi woman banned Jan 19 2005

A north Warwickshire taxi driver has been fined £350 plus £250 costs by magistrates at Nuneaton.

Clare Allton, from Galley Common, also received six penalty points on her driving licence for allowing an unlicensed hackney carriage driver to use her vehicle.

She intends to appeal against the suspension of her hackney carriage licence; magistrates will hear her plea next month.

The driver had failed to display the hackney carriage plate and so was uninsured.

Peter Staveley, assistant director of environment and health, said: "There are laws covering hackney carriages and private hire vehicles which aim to protect the public.

"Drivers also have to undergo a medical assessment and a criminal records bureau check.

"The taxi vehicles have two MoT tests a year and borough council staff also carry out random checks, so it is a pretty rigorous procedure."

He added that drivers of hackney carriages or private hire vehicles must be wearing a badge issued by the borough council, bearing the council's logo, name and photo of the driver and an expiry date.
