ISN'T IT ILLEGAL FOR PRIVATE HIRE TO USE THE WORD TAXI?

I think it is illegal for private hire to have the word 'taxi' or 'cab' on their vehicles. I'm a private hire driver and I work for a taxi company, the uniform tops have the words '****** **** taxis' on them because that is the name of the company I work for. Well I did until I spat my dummy out and give them their set back

The ASA can now legislate over online adverts as well as written ones.

Put a complaint in if companies are using the word 'Taxi' when they shouldn't.

Needless to say, they'll have their work cut out in London where every two bob Minicab operator is trying to cash in on our world famous name and reputation.

A lot of them love the title of 'Airport specialist'

What the [edited by admin] is that? You take them to the Airport, or you bring them back? I must be an Airport Specialist as well then?

We have a company in our town who use the word taxi on their private hire cars. I was told that because the company have hackney carriages as well as private hire they can use the word taxi as it is part of the company name.

I agree, but I don't know of a single Minicab firm in London that can boast a genuine London Taxi as being part of it's operation.

That is the same here except the private hire vehicles cannot have the word 'taxi' on the vehicle. The company can call itself whatever they want but I'm sure private hire cannot have the word 'taxi' on their vehicle regardless of how many taxis the company has.

I was watching the scenario outside T1 on Monday the ratio appeared (taken over 30 mins) "Hackneys 8"." Arrow 1". I did see a guy go to the first Hackney and ask a price but then he went over to first parked Arrow car. (All eyes on him!) The arrow driver did the right thing and directed him to their booking office. The customer didn't get that far as he was besieged by hackney drivers they obviously struck a deal as off he went in a black cab!
Another observation is that the majority of Hackney drivers have improved their dress sense and are bending over backwards to be polite!
So who are going to be the winners here except Manchester Airport?

I know this may fly (excuse the pun) in the face of the hackney brigade but maybe the punter is the winner!!. Do not assume that everybody who wants a Ta er car to take them somewhere walks out of the terminal. The vast majority of savy travellers BOOK in advance.

Arrow Cars GOSSIP

Arrow Cars Airport

Gossip around the ranks took a sinister turn today. Apart from the Hackneys being aggrieved by Arrow cars, it is believed they have upset a few of the private hire operators around Wythenshawe. Arrow cars have “poached” several drivers from the existing PH operators. The operators of Wythenshawe have issued a warning saying any driver going to Arrow cars and not being able to make it pay, will NOT be welcome to return. We doubt they will stick to this pledge, radio rents in Wythenshawe are around £90 a week. No operator will be able to turn that down.

However GOSSIP now tells us that some operators have issued a “bounty” on Arrow cars vehicles. It is said that if you smash a window on an Arrow car and film it on your mobile, one operator will reward you with £20 if you film it on your phone.

I think we should distance ourselves from any action such as this. It is bound to result in repercussions. All representatives are engaging in difficult discussions to try to resolve the situation at the Airport. Any illegal activity will result in damaging this process beyond repair.

Arrow cars latest conquest

Just did some searching about Arrow Cars after a pretty poor experience at Manchester this morning and found your blog

After this mornings experience and reading your blogs...I'm amazed they have got these airport contracts.

The woman on the desk was probably very new and had little or no training and did seem pretty stressed out to start with. Eventually, as she was dealing with a mix up from another customer we were served and quoted £17 for a journey home to Heaton Mersey. I thought it was a bit on the steep side but probably cheaper than a black cab but just wanted to get home and had no UK money to pay so I could pay at the desk by card.

We were eventually were loaded into a cab with our cases, the driver went to get confirmation that we were booked as his fare (as he wasn't sure) and returned to say we were not which meant we had to unload everything again!!! He said another cab would be along shortly. Another short wait..no cab so I went back in to the desk, they all still seemed clueless so at this point asked for a refund and got a black cab.

The cost of this was £15.50....I tend not to use black cabs as i assume private cabs are cheaper!!!

So in summary, incompetent and considerably over priced...an .absolute joke after a 7.5 hour flight from new York...we were all really tired as we'd little sleep.

Brummie you are right incredibly stupid, but, the hackneys are worse. On Wed night a driver was exercising in the Gym cabin (I know, a GYM). Some of the Asian drivers came in and asked the driver to leave whilst they used the Gym as a prayer room. The driver (white, named Colin) told them where to go. There are 5 prayer rooms around the terminals for all faiths.

An altercation took place and Police were called. The police claim this is 7 or 8 occasions over the past month they have been called to attend incidents on the Airport ranks. The Police have complained directly to the Airport Authorities about this. How can the Asian drivers behave like this at this moment in time, when they know the Hackney trade is under scrutiny and threat.

A further indicator that the cabins and "PIG PEN" taxi holding area is under threat is ; there were two machines in the "pen" which were used for adding credit to the GPS tag which allocates money to the Airport when you pass through barriers carrying a passenger. One of the machines has been moved onto one of the terminals, if they remove the other there will be no need to use the pen and it may be reclaimed.

What is the correct designation of this cabin?

Is it a gym or a prayer room?

If it's a prayer room, can other religious denominations use it?

If not, why not?

If Christians can use it, can Catholics throw holy water from Lourdes around the cabin before they pray?

I think the cab trade won't be at Manchester Airport much longer, if they carry on like this!!

Regarding the post from a passenger stating he booked a trip with Arrow from the airport to Heaton Mersey. The service was so bad he got a refund and jumped in a cab.

His primary reason(s) for using Arrow in the first place were: (a) He had little or no cash and paid on credit card: (b) He assumed the cabs were too expensive.

The question is, how many other "potential" passengers share this opinion and how can you deal with it?

It should be fairly simple to pay by c/card (although some drivers won't like it) and to make the prices easily and clearly available for passengers to compare to Arrow or the other pre - book brigade.

Why not sort out these issues and use some of the funds of the many radio circuits and union(s) trade reps and advertise in the M.E.N or other papers. Where is your own "Blackcab/Airport website on google? Is it ranked higher than Arrow?

In the cab trade there are lots of moaners and not enough Alan Sugars.

My view is lift the game, get modern or lose more and more work.

Just some private thoughts shared with friends, to provoke debate.

It is a condition of working at Brum Airport that ALL drivers have individual Chip and Pin mobile credit card terminals!

Have to agree with littlejack. This trade is full of moaning rankers.
We've got a guy in Derby who said I shouldn't be allowed to invest my own money in a website and take airport work off the bigger firms!! WTF?
There is work out there if you get off your arse and do something about it.

Why not advertise a few sample fares on their cabs with comparison to Arrows' prices for the same trip? No cost involved.
