Taxi driver gets wife to take speeding rap

A moonlighting taxi driver got his wife to take the blame for his speeding three times to avoid a ban.

In a case that echoes ­allegations against Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne, Alan Lawson, 55, pinned the offences on wife Elizabeth, 63, ­because he already had nine points.

A businessman in the daytime, he pulled the trick twice in 2009 in Gateshead and once again in March last year. But when police studied CCTV and saw a man at the wheel in March, they went back over his earlier fines.

The Gateshead couple admitted lying and were told at Newcastle crown court the scam “strikes at the heart of the justice system”.

Both were given six-month suspended jail terms and 100 hours of unpaid work.
