Carlisle man kicked taxi door in row over fare

A four-mile taxi drive cost a Carlisle man more than £600 after he refused to pay the fare and then kicked the car door.

Carlisle magistrates heard how 50-year-old Steven Neaves got into a taxi on May 7 after a night out with friends.

He got the cab home to Crindledyke estate from the city centre and queried the £8.70 charge.

Prosecutor Adrienne Harris told the court that Neaves was told to pay up or he would be taken to the police station.

Neaves admitted kicking the door and, as the taxi went along Botchergate, the driver stopped a Special Constable.

Neaves was arrested and charged with criminal damage and fraud, by not paying a taxi fare, which he admitted.

He was fined £270 for damage to the taxi, and ordered to pay compensation of £286.43, court costs of £85, the £8.70 fine and a £15 victim surcharge.
