PARENTS with baby buggies and people with disablities who struggle with public transport will now find it easier to use taxis around town, thanks to a change in council policy.

Previously, regulations had prevented new taxi firms from setting up in the town but Great Yarmouth Borough Council relaxed the rules before Christmas, saying it would award licences to companies providing good disabled facilities.

On Tuesday the council handed over the first Hackney carriage licence plate since de-regulation to Bunny Cabs for its new vehicle.

Owner of Bunny Cabs Nigel Davis said it was ideal way for people who have difficulty getting about town without their own transport.

"This new vehicle is designed to cater for everybody and make life a bit easier for them," he said. "We can help people with all sorts of needs, including people with wheelchairs, double baby buggies, and we can take the largest scooter there is. We even transported a Shetland pony once!"

The new taxi, which costs £25,000, is better equipped than previous models and allows people in wheelchairs to sit in the main body of the car with other passengers.

Council leader Barry Coleman said: "We feel that there is a good balance between providing an improved service to all members of the public, particularly those with disabilities, and safeguarding the livelihood of existing taxi drivers. Not many companies will be able to pay out this much for a new vehicle so we are not going to be swamped with new firms."

He added: "I'm pleased that a company like this has taken up the baton so quickly.

I think the Council are forgetting something here, people must get out of the wheelchair when in the cab same as puschairs, these cabs weren't made for carrying pushchairs with babies strapped in them.

Don't worry Nidge the Police will catch up with those not complying with the law, which clearly states that a child cannot be carried in its pushchair.

We've gone through all this [edited by admin] up here, double standards all over the place again, but certain exemptions are made within law to allow certain forms of public transport to do certain things not afforded to other people offering public transport services.

Ahh so he's basically stating that if youve got the money you can be a cab owner, whilst delimiting on the basis of the OFT report.....now what did that report say about restricted entry because of vehicle prices?
