i dunno about this one. probably just one of those rumours. there are already plenty of HC ranks provided for the Navy dockyard. i think theres one outside each of the five gates.

is inside the yard still government owned or is it DML (therefore private) land?

a rank inside would not work, we have 3 miles of waterfront and 25 or so ship berths (including south yard and the basins) so unless they have a rank on every wharf, they wont cover the work. if they had one or two big ranks inside the yard, it still would not work.

sailors are only human like the rest of us, and lazy like the rest of us, they would rather phone for a car to come to the gangway instead of walking god know how far to a rank and then wait around outside in the cold and rain. especially when they got their glad rags on for a night out. and I'm sure the yard police are going to love seeing hundreds (yes hundreds) of people walking around in civvy clothes that would be a security nightmare for them.

i don't know about going in one gate and out another. i know we are going to be getting proper dockyard passes soon, like the navy and DML workers, so we show it at the gate and keep it with us, instead of leaving your badge at the gate you entered by, like we do now, so it could work that way.

we got the entry forms today. seemed like the usual 'tick the box if you are a terrorist' type of form

what was interesting though is that according to the conditions of entry your not allowed to use the radio inside the base, didnt know that one before  .

Also HC drivers are not permited to pick up flaggers within the base. so there goes the rank rumour.

by rights radios should be left at the gatehouse

official secrets an all that.

leave radios at the gate house good one try getting back the same radio on the way out er which one was it and looks like the different gate entry exit is out aswell and those sailors dont like paying extra for entry exit to the yard thats why i think ranks wont work either didnt the office say dont leave the pick up point until they comfirmed that its a no fare lets see them work that one out

last time i used the radio in the dockyard i had a crap signal so ended up phoning the office anyway. must be to do with the radar signals or somethings.

i'm sure the customers will love it waiting while your on your hands and knees with a screw driver at the gate.

and if radios are not allowed then that should also apply to mobile phones especially those with cameras. i cant see them taking mobile phones off everybody who comes in to the yard!! but then, like the rest of us, the MOD police are sensable enough to let it pass.
