Is it legal for an operator to fine a driver over a dispute with a customer,
eg not opening a door for an old person when that person has someone
younger with them.

No it's not legal.

Don't pay it and see what they do.

Or if you know what they will do and don't want that, then pay it.

I guess it depends whether you've agreed a contract for such 'fines'. If you don't mind me asking how much is the 'fine'?

Try the small claims court, or you could ask your council if a 'fit and proper' operator would 'fine' drivers.

Can I assume that, when you signed up with the Operator, you signed up for certain Terms & Conditions.

If it stated:~ "Thou shalt open the door for Little Old Ladies," you're stuffed.

If it didn't, but said something along the lines of "you should offer the Customer all suitable Care and Attention." then I think that you should start a discussion, but you're on very thin Ice.

If there is a term or condition that states that you can be fined for certain things, you could try challenging this as an unfair term. Lets face it, if a driver is so bad that they need fining then they should not be deemed fit and proper. However if the company is fining drivers for little things it could be seen as just raising revenue. I for one would not work for a company that says that it would fine it's drivers and I would never fine any of my drivers.

No it is not legal, only the courts can issue fines and they have to be for breaches of laws made in Parliament.
Looking at your location I think I know who you drive for, is your car blue by any chance ? If so the owner of this company is notorious for fining drivers over trivial matters, and not small amounts either, not doing a compulsory shift £200 for example. Unfortunately he also has the habit of disabling your system until the fine is paid, so you have to pay the fine or you don't work.

My advice is you have a badge, you can drive for any firm you like. Tell him to get lost and switch to another company, stop lining his pocket, he doesn't give a stuff about his drivers only how many cars he can put on, at the highest rent and lowest fares in town, plus all the hidden extras he levies like PDA, credit card machine, paying for the privilege of doing out of towners (and then charging a further £5 for every 40 miles you do on an out of towner !). Go and drive for someone else, it'll cost you less and you won't have any of the hassles you currently have.

This PH Operator sounds like a right CHAMPION AR*EHOLE!!!!
