Man arrested after Brighton taxi driver assaulted

12:38pm Thursday 6th October 2011

A taxi driver was left shocked and injured after being assaulted while at work.

The 46-year-old local man was driving three men into Brighton off the A27 and down Lewes Road when they allegedly began to purposefully distract him.

Sussex Police said he was concerned for his safety and they then started pulling on the steering wheel.

Officers added it resulted in a minor crash as the driver collided with parked cars in Riley Road, Brighton, when he attempted to pull over.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident which took place at about 8am on Saturday.

Two of the passengers ran off but the third was caught by the taxi driver who was helped by members of the public.

During the incident police say the driver was bitten on the cheek and his finger was cut.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics for shock and his injuries.

A 21-year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage and driving offences and released on bail until November 14.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999.
