That's not necessarily the case.

He can only work for people who allow him to drive their vehicles.

Clearly not self-employed at all then.

I'm not aware of such a thing. I have my taxi badge issued by council. Dunno about anything else.

When they issued your taxi badge did you not also get a paper copy that states that this bit (the paper copy) must be handed to the proprietor for him to hold until you stop working for him (her)?

they are not your customers, they just happened to phone you #-o

yer self employed mate if one guy cant give you the shifts that you reqire to make a living then who the hell is he to tell you that you cant seek work elswhere.

btw he needs you more than you need him..tell him to ram it cheeky bar steward

First off they are my customers that I have worked hard for years to get and retain secondly in my firm all work is shared fairly between the drivers so it would be incredibly unfair to allow someone to poach and steal customers off my drivers many of whom have families and plenty of bills to pay thirdly in our manor there are a lot of drivers who operate as "spies" claiming they want to leave the firm they are working for and come and drive for you 3 months later they are off back to the previous firm which is run by their cousin with a list of all your customers and an army of other relatives freshly arrived from Pakistan that go banging on your customers doors offering cheaper fares whilst they are waiting to get their badges It might be differant round your way but round here you have to be very careful who you allow to drive for you.

The Peterborough Asian commumity have set their sites on gaining 100% control of the trade in our town but unlike Peterborough where their tricks worked they haven't found it so easy here

True.

Though, looking at the first post, the OP says the owner of the other company would give him a vehicle to use when carrying out their bookings.
