I recently moved licensing area from Wyre Forest, to Birmingham. my insurance in Wyre Forest two years ago was £832 fully comp. This year, the same insurance comp, with the same no claims wanted £2667 because I would be licensed by Brum. My question is this.

If you have a Hackney from Sandwell or Walsall working for a Private Hire firm in Brum, is there insurance cheaper than mine?

There is an offence called "Fronting" whereby a parent insures a car which will be used mostly by one of their children who can't afford teenage insurance rates.

When there is an accident and the insurance company finds out that the teenager is the main driver and not the parent, they pay all of the costs, but then recover those costs from their own policy holder, as the vehicle was insured illegally "fronting".

Is Insuring your Taxi for one area and then working mainly in another area the same thing?

Very interesting question in view of the prevalence of the Berwick HC scenario and Delta PH licenced in Sefton but effectively operating in Liverpool.

Of course, from a licensing perspective none of the above is illegal, but it would be interesting to hear the view from the insurance side of things.

But with a company as on top of things and operating on the scale that Delta does I would imagine the insurance aspect is well and truly sorted.

At a rough guess I suspect that if you're doing a Delta or Berwicking then as long as you tell your insurer that you're operating primarily in another LA then you're OK, but if they're not told then it could be regarded as a non-disclosure.

Where's TDO's resident insurance expert when you need him? Probably out taxi driving :lol: :wink:

I think the question is good, I would also like to know the answer from a broker.

From memory last year I was asked the postcode where I indended to work......I wonder how many out of town drivers answer honestly?

Is answering honestly illegal? Probably not, but if it came to light a person deliberately misled the insurance company?

I wonder.

Both.....I'm pretty sure they also asked the postcode for the main rank I used.

I was only asked where my vehicle and I were licensed, and my address (which is still in Wyre Forest and hasn't changed), Insurance has risen, and when I was given my proof of no claims bonus it came with a quote for my original vehicle and licence for £938. I wasn't asked where I would be working or which rank, just where I would be licensed.

You answer your own question then.......if a person is licensed in one area....then works in another.....and is only asked where he is licensed....his insurance would be based upon the area where he is licensed rather than where he is working.

Another insurance company scam....thats all



im being asked to pay £2000 insurance till the 3rd party claim is sorted, yet the insurers havent paid them or me a penny, hows that fair? and the 3rd party hasnt claimed on his insurance and they havent claimed on mine, its a "accident claim" company sticking their oar in and havent even got back to my insurers with details of what they are claiming for!

my insurance was going to be £1300.......

im seriously considering packing it in now

Got it in one! Had some holiday due from the main job so guess what I've been up to! I've been luckiy enought to be driving the new Peugeout Premier hackney from Cab Direct, but more of that another time.

On the question of how premiums are calculated, as long as all the questions are answered fully and truthfully then no problem. Most insurers are now rating on where you are licensed rather than your home postcode as used to be more common. I can now only think of one insurer that rates on home postcode and that's only because their IT system can't be amended to to otherwise, or so I understand.

It is normal for insurance co's to ask for a copy of you badge so they will know for sure which LA you work through. If you are asked for the postcode of your base office, you must of course answer correctly if you are doing a "Berwick" and are a hackney working PH out of area. If you have a good broker, he/she should advise you. If you deal through a call centre type firm you might not get the complete advice needed but do ask.

Non Disclosure is the thing. If you give false or incomplete information when asked you could find yourself in bother.

This is always a moot point. As we are talking about a no claim bonus, not a no blame bonus, if an allegation is made against a policyholder the ncb will be reduced until such time as the claim file is closed. This can take up to 1 year from the date the last correspondence was received from a third party. I have a client in this very position and we are holding our breath until mid Feb 2012.

The problem is that an insurance company will have to put a "reserve" on any potential claim to keep their books straight. Undereserving has been the cause of insurance company failures (Independent, Drake and HSBC are good examples). On the other side of the coin. most policyholders would be reluctant to reimburse an insurer retrospectively say 18 months after an incident when a payment was made. The whole system is far from perfect but TBH I can't really think of an alternative. In these circumstances protected NCB can help if you have the option to buy it. Not all co's insist you have the max NCB to protect it so it is worth asking if this is an option.

Well the 3rd party (him what hit me (well it wasnt ME who changed lanes)) obviously reported the "incident" from whence the "AMC" (aka ambulane chasers) got his details from and offered to pursue my insurance for £2750 for (as yet) undisclosed repairs/whatever. In other words its a totally speculative rogue claim in an incident where neither party admitted blame (if he had a case he would have gone through his and mine insurance brokers/company( and where I was PAST the truck and correctly following my lane, the 3rd party claims to have an independent witness by which i think he means the 2nd crew in the truck cab.

its a long way from a HGV passenger seat to the other side/front/lower corner

my Insurance had asked 14th dec again for info, they will close the claim 4th feb if none are forthcoming

Year 3 - £1250
Year 4 - due

so thats almost £5000 ive paid in premiums, I think i deserve my NCB

I watched a gov program tonight I think it was the transport select comity.
They had a couple of insurance bosses before them and they said that due to the european court judgment, loading insurance premiums was now against the law, from what I could get the drift of that applies to 17 to 25 year olds, but could apply to everyone
