What about School times when the traffic is mayhem? A £5 job can turn into a £6.60 job with 8 minutes of waiting time.

So what's the point of fare cards in taxis then?

A good price guide would explain to the customer why a £5 job could turn into a £6.60 one because of traffic congestion - indeed any sensible person would merely use their common sense - whereas a £20 fare for the same job would be more difficult for the driver to explain away.

they have them at Manchester airport to be used as a guide to the price,I have also seen them at heathrow.?

Indeed, it would be a price guide, not a price list as some above seem to be portraying it as.

So we are agreed taxi ranks should have a table of fares and a price guide displayed on the ranks.I will write to the law commission with our proposal.

I reckon so yeah, it only states the flag, running mile and waiting time.

To me "fare card" and "tariff card" have always meant the same thing.

Didn't realise there was a difference :-k

Its generally a mistake to have fare boards at places,is that not why we have meters and fare tables inside vehicles ? Cant speak for everywhere else but people generally ask" how much? "here unless there regular riders then theyll know the fare. Some companys here have fare tables at venues/hotels which are lower fares than the meter,so guess what happens when they go to the rank outside and get to their destination ....The reply is usually take it up with your hotelier and get him to refund you.

So is a fare table different from a fare card which is different from a tariff card?

For instance you get a board at manchester/heathrow airport saying the price to somewhere. In a cab you get a tarrif/fareplate explaining the fare based on the meter ,waiting time ect

So punters have to wait for a cab, get in it with their calculator and google map, and then estimate how much the fare should be.

Rather than having a price guide on the rank.
