I have just been looking up the smallest citys in the UK and I have to say that I was amazed that the smallest city in England is actually the city of London.

blackpool: The City of London has a tiny number of Residents. almost no-one lives there. Many people work there, but they all commute!

According to Wikipedia there are two smaller (less populous) cities in the UK, namely a couple of villages in Wales.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sm ... ed_Kingdom

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ci ... ed_Kingdom

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London

Indeed, the City of London has over 300,000 people working there - in the 'square mile' - and only 10,000 or so residents (number depending on source).

Indeed, it's a strange area because even the pubs and shops don't open at the weekend after Friday night, even on Saturday.

This is so even a couple of tube stops from Oxford Circus on the Central Line, ie between Holborn/Chancery Lane area, even though the Square Mile/City doesn't start until a couple of stops further on, ie St Paul's, Bank or thereabouts.

Some great photos of the City of London and other London landmarks on the Telegraph's site today.

Not much to do with taxis in Scotland, but I don't think these are discussed here these days

Dusty: As you say the number of Residents depends on Source. When my Cousin was Lord Mayor. He was, technically, a Resident there. I believe that there is a small Flat in The Mansion House that is available for the Lord Mayor's personal use.

However, he actually lived in Sandwich (on the edge of the Golf Course) and used his Kensington Flat when he was in Town. I would think that many of the other City Residents have similar arrangements. I can't remember whether the Barbican is within the City Boundaries but many of the Flats there are deserted at the Weekend unless friends, or family, are using them while attending Concerts or Functions in the City.

In fact it all just proves what some have been saying for years - if Scotland has its own section, then London should have one as well [-(
