Just go to the front of the cab rank and photo the drivers face when you give him the destination.

I was following a post on Flyertalk and apparantly people are being told it's a flat fare of £35.00. I emailed the taxi company via the link from Heathrows website and was quoted £15.00.
Does anybody know if a flat fare exists, or are people being ripped off ever so slightly?

The poster on Flyertalk said it was black cabs, I clicked on the taxi link for heathrow taxis, whose logo is the traditional black cab, however in their pricing link it states "At Heathrow Taxis we don't use meters, all our prices are set and calculated on the mileage between the pick-up and destination postcodes"

Is that legal?

Exactly, I was hoping someone from that neck of the woods would be able to answer.

One of the posters had this reply from BAA when they complained:

Quote:
Morning all, I've had the following response from BAA;

Dear Sgt Ryan,

Thank you for getting in touch about your recent visit to Terminal 5. I am very sorry you had such a poor experience while finding a taxi to your hotel, you are right to be frustrated.

Black cabs are licensed by the Public Carriage Office and BAA have no power to regulate taxi charges from Heathrow. Our airport falls just outside the boundary of the Greater London Authority so black cabs are not required to take a fare from the airport and there is no payment structure if they do.

To incentivise taxi drivers to take passengers outside the boundary without overcharging we have introduced a voluntary scheme called 'Fares Fare' where if taxi drivers charge no more than £35 for a journey outside of the Greater London Authority area then we allow them to go to the front of the Heathrow taxi feeder park and pay a reduced rate on their return. £35 is a maximum fare, not a fixed or recommended fare. We do not believe that £35 for a two mile journey is an acceptable fare.

I am sorry that the taxi marshalls gave you misleading information on your visit and were not more helpful in the circumstances. We will raise this with the appropriate team and ask them to carry out retraining so they are able to give passengers the best information.

For your next visit, we work with Green Tomato cars who provide a private hire vehicle service from our terminals giving customers an alternative choice if they feel that a licensed taxi driver is overcharging for their journey. To book in advance you can visit their website at: http://www.greentomatocars.com/

Once again I am sorry this happened. If you're able to email me your postal address I will arrange for £35.00 in vouchers to be mailed to you. I hope this will in some way make up for the frustration you have faced. You can email me at feedback@baa.com.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

Yours sincerely,

Have I got this right? The taxis ranking at the airport are not licenced to ply for hire there because they are outside of their licensing area?

It would appear so, one has to ask if this is legal too?

As far as I know, Heathrow must be in the Greater London Authority - it's in the London Borough of Hillingdon.

Taxis at Heathrow must accept a booking of up to 20 miles which goes into the GLA and the fare must be charged on the meter.

Any booking above 20 miles, also in the GLA (so places east of Aldgate/Tower Hill, Streatham, Sutton), the driver may refuse, but the fare must still be charged what's on the meter.

Journeys outside the GLA (generally towards the west of the airport), the driver may refuse, and you can negotiate the fare before the journey starts.

Therefore the taxi driver at Terminal 5 must take you to the Hilton Terminal 4 (still in the GLA, and obvously less than 20 miles) and must charge you what would be in the meter, and it would most likely to be less than £15.

I think what he is saying is that T5 is on the very edge of London, maybe only a couple of 100 yards in it.

Therefore any job going outside of London can be refused, or charged at any rate the driver decides on.

I think the Airport are at fault by not insisting that any cab that picks up on their ranks uses the approved London meter rate no matter where they drop.
