Can anybody help??
Last night I was driving along a 40 mph road (embankment road for you plymouth ites) and was maybe slightly over the limit (speed wise, not drink!)
Anyway, I drove past a blue van parked on the side of the road which obviously belonged to the police as they had about 5 cars/motorbikes in the next lay-by to pull people over. My question is this, can the speed camera vans catch you at night? I know the gatso's can because obviously they flash at you. If it was a speed camera one then surely it should have been marked up as so with 'safety enforcement team' or whatever they use?
Or My 2nd theory....was it one of those fancy, number plate recognition thingys?

Hopefully my 2nd theory is right and I won't have a letter through the post soon!

I doubt it was a camera van, they are usually white with orange lights on the top.

I think it will be this little item.

The rest of the police would be there to stop anyone who's number plate doesn't have an up-to-date tax disc. They would then check out the motor and driver.

If it was a speeding issue, then they wouldn't need the other police to be present.

Spped detector vans have a little hatch in the door or similar as the Laser needs clear line of sight, but the number plate recognition stuff works behind the tinted glass in the back doors no problem at all (I presume it was a dark blue Peugeot Partner, Citroen Dispatch type van, as every one I have ever seen is).

If you car flags as a bit dodgy you get pulled by the waiting plod. (only takes seconds to check out the reg).

Please correct me if im wrong :?: but under EU legistration all speed cameras have to be highly viable so why are the vans not??? all the ones in use in Scotland are white with just a thin strip going around the center and small writing with police speed detector writen on it, are the police therefor braking the law.
Also the vans must be stable at all times as the lazer used needs to be level at all times for a direct shot so if any of the ocupants move the van will rock and the same applys if its windy or a large vehichall passes just as they are taking a picture
If you get cought fight it all the way.
