Hi all,

This is my first time posting on TDO so be gentle with me guys. Just a little bit of history to let you know who I am. I've been a Glasgow Taxi driver for roughly ten years and I am also the moderator of a forum set up by one of my mates for Glasgow Taxi Drivers. The forum, http://www.glasgowtaxiforum.com
also has a visitors section so you can go on and see what sort of topicas are being discussed in Glasgow.

The abovementioned topic is partly due to a question I was asked and also had a yearning to find out for myself.

The subject of coachlines and names (whether it be family or pets) on the back of taxis came up in a conversation at our tea break recently and the problem arose when no-one could put a definitive time scale or reason for it happening to it.

So, as a first post I decided to put the question to the greater masses. Where did the phenomenon of coachlines and names start and what was the reason behind it? Was it a game of oneupmanship or was it to put a more refined look to the cab? Or was it for some other reason?

If any historical reason can be linked to it with corroborative evidence, for example , a link to a website or the name of a book covering the matter , I would be extremely appreciative.

I await your varied and colourful answers with baited breath.

All the best,

TDB

Is this just a Glasgow/Scottish thing, cos I'm not sure we have that down here.

Have you any pictures?

I always thought it was a condition of Glasgow's license that the proprietors name had to be on the read door of the vehicle.....also the colours decided for the coachlines were sometimes dependent upon the footy team a proprietor followed.
