Social protection for taxi sector
Plans are in place to formalise working conditions for taxi drivers and to extend social security to them, the Department of Labour says.
This follows the announcement by Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana in Pretoria this week of his intention to promulgate the Taxi Sectoral Determination in April.
Mdladlana explained that the Taxi Sectoral Determination would define taxi employees' working conditions, and the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) was gearing itself to register taxi employers.
He said the promulgation of the Taxi Sectoral Determination was a culmination of more than four years of consultations and negotiations.
"I am under no illusion that it is going to be easy. Let me say up front that the coming months will prove to be difficult as we continue with our resolve to protect vulnerable workers... taxi drivers," said Mdladlana.
The minister added the Sectoral Determination would cover taxi drivers, taxi marshals and rank managers.
"I will be promulgating the Taxi Sectoral Determination on April 28 2005," he said.
Unemployment Insurance commissioner, Shakes Mkhonto, said plans were in place to cater for the influx of taxi employers.
