Cab? Not at this rate

May 16 2012 Birkenhead News

LAST week, I went to see Benjamin Zephaniah at St George’s Hall, and was enjoying the best of Liverpool.
At 9.45pm, I got in a black cab at the Empire end of Lime Street station. After stating my destination, the driver put the meter on rate 3, though it should only be rate 1 (as he should well know). When I told him this, he become aggressive and wouldn’t open the doors even when I told him I wished to get out and get in another taxi. After asking about 10 times, he opened the door.
I asked the driver behind what rate, and he too said 3. I walked to the other side of the station, and got a wonderful polite driver who charged me the correct rate, rate 1, and told me my destination was one mile within the boundary line, and that I should have taken the first driver’s number. I was just in such a panic I didn’t think to.

Hackney drivers need to stop trying to rip people off. There are some great ones, but so many put it deliberately on the wrong rate, although this was the first time one has been aggressive to me when told of their error. Thankfully, I am assertive and was sober, but God help any vulnerable person, or anyone a little tipsy.

The council need to seriously monitor the people applying for taxi badges – they need to have the right personality and attitude. I advise anyone to take the taxi number as soon as you sit down.

This mob sound like a recipe for rip-off.

HTF do the council allow a manually operated, multi-tariff taximeter system in these days?

We have manually operated meters. If you have a vehicle that can carry over 4 passengers here you need to have 2 day rates and 2 night rates. One each for up to 4 passengers and one each for 5 or more passengers.
With calendar controlled meters, how do they work for bank holidays, particulaly when, like this year, the late May bank holiday has been moved by a week and an extra bank holiday has been added?

Easy its all done automatically, for any extra bank hols you go and get it put on at meter agent

We are 25 miles from the meter agent and it costs £20.00 for any changes. What about the different rates for 5 or more passengers?

That's the only one that has to be manual.
It's used by a minority here to rip off the public.

The meter compamies know the Bank Holidays two to three years in advance, so there's no problem progamming them into the tariff card.

A few drivers on my firm had calander meters a few years back and because we didn't have a fare increase for a few years we had no T3 at christmas or new year and had to add it on manually.
