Nelson taxi rank to be axed for car parking8:00pm Tuesday 5th June 2012 A taxi rank in Cross Street, Nelson, is set to be removed to provide more car parking space.
A 24-hour rank was created in January for three vehicles at the request of the hackney carriage trade.
The decision to grant the rank meant daytime parking space was lost, but the rank is now set to revert to being for two vehicles between 6pm and 1am.
Jackie Allen, Pendle Council’s taxi licensing manager, said: “Since the introduction of the rank, it has only been used for approximately one week and has remained empty since then.
“The trade has said that they did not get any work from the rank even when signage was erected pointing the public towards the rank.
“Complaints have been received from members of the public that the rank is not being used and it is taking up valuable parking space.
“The removal of the 24-hour rank would provide daytime parking for members of the public while still providing a taxi rank in the evening for users of the ACE Centre.”
