A message to all forum users
Dear All
My name is Sam Poyser. I am a lecturer in criminology at Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent. If you want to view my profile search for ‘Sam Poyser Canterbury Christ Church’ as I am unable to post link. As you will see, my previous research is primarily in the area of miscarriages of justice. However, I am now starting a completely new piece of research which will examine ‘the taxi driver as a victim of crime’.
I would like to conduct interviews (individual and group interviews) with taxi drivers all over the country. ALL of those interviewed will remain anonymous in the final research publication. Interviews would take place at a place and time suitable for you and would take around one hour. I am looking for a good sample of taxi drivers (in terms of age, race, gender, etc) working in England and Wales, including those who have and have not been a victim of crime behind the wheel. Please contact me if you would be happy to take part in the research or if you know a driver who would perhaps like to take part please pass my details onto them. The interviews would not take place until 2013, but knowing how busy you all are I am looking to ask people to express an interest in taking part well in advance of this time. If you would like to contact me please either private message me or send me an email via my Canterbury email address:
sam.poyser at canterbury.ac.uk (replace at with @) (mods hope this is ok)
This is your chance to have your say as part of what will, I hope, be the largest piece of research on crimes against taxi drivers in the country.

"In terms of crimes against taxi drivers, I want to find out more about all crimes, including fare dodgers, runners, and disputes between cabbies (and the response of the authorities to driver victimisation in this area in particular)".

I hope to hear from you. If you have any information on this issue which you feel would help my study, but do not wish to take part in the actual study itself I would also be very grateful to receive it.
Kindest regards
Sam Poyser

Hi edders23
It is a big can of worms, but one which I hope many drivers will help me to open and air to the public, so that as many people as possible are aware of what drivers are going through.

What are you looking for.... stories from the past..... or how the cab trade, police and council can work together, towards drivers' safety.

You will need to include the CPS in your brief.

My experience is of 3 occasions, over 14 months ago, where attacks on a taxi Driver have occurred, with corroborating evidence, and the miscreants have yet to be bought to Court.

I also think that you will have to create some kind of differentiation between those that drive Saloons (Private Hires) and those that drive Taxis, also known as Hackney Cabs.

There are 100s possibly 1000s of attacks on drivers that have been reported in gory detail in the press, and possibly 10 times that not reported.

We are all very vulnerable, particular the guys and girls who work at night. If I wore a hat I would take it off to them.

The police talk a good game about protecting us, but in the main they couldn't give a rat's behind, unless one of us has blood gushing out of our body.

Thankfully the courts now make it an aggravating feature if we are attacked, but I would sooner it made a case of attacking a taxi/PH driver meant jail. No ifs, no buts, just jail.

Good luck with your endeavours.

Police work within the laws they are restricted by, most PC's I've ever come across want to help but sometimes the issue doesn't warrant the time available to them,

Any proper cabby knows how 2, it's only a weapon if it's a weapon, hairspray isn't a weapon but it sure does give CS gas a run for it's money

This girl/women/guy needs real research subjects, not some, Uncle Tom, blowing his trumpet.

And remind me who you are..... Oh yes, you used to be a taxi-driver.. =D>

What I pointed out to her, was that there was more taxi and private hire drivers murdered in the last 15 to 20 years.... compare that to bus drivers. train drivers. coach drivers. and that the majority were driving saloon vehicles.. not purpose-built Hackney's... and that there used to be a forum listing murdered taxi drivers across the world.... How that is blowing my own Trumper is beyond me.
