It is nearly impossible for train companies to make money with all the ridiculous charges that they have to pay network rail. I was told recently that if you want to meet a network rail employee to discuss anything lineside related you have to pay £250 before the network rail person will even consider turning up !!!

It's not Network Rail Edders it's the Rolling Stock Companies (ROSCO's) they own all the trains that run on the tracks, they lease them to the Train Operating Companies at an inflated price, a bit like renting a Taxi from the owner.

The Tories gave the go ahead for these ROSCO's to be set up when they sold off British Rail, guess who set up the biggest ROSCO? Yep "Tory supporters". They invested a nominal fee of £50million between a good few of them, when they set the trap and tied all the train operating companies down they sold it off for close to a billion and a ½ quid making them a small fortune for something they got for nearly free.

The Train operating companies pay Network Rail to run the rolling stock on their tracks nothing more and nothing else, it's like renting a house, they do all the repairs while you pay them rent.

In 1975 the British taxpayer subsidised the railways to the tune of £550 million approx

In 2012 the taxpayer pays £12 Billion which is mostly paid to Network rail for maintaining and improving the network BUT some of it is paid as revenue support for the running of services and some to TFL for the underground

BUT I believe that Virgin trains ( Branson) as well as East Coast , First great western and some of the companies running commuter services into London Actually pay money to the taxpayer not receive it

does that explain it a little better toots !

Branson and Virgin don't own any trains Edders, see my post above. No train operating company own their own trains, they are leased off a ROSCO.

I did not say they did own any trains if you read my post they OPERATE services and pay fanchise payments to the treasury

I know all about the ROSCO's which have been bought and sold many times mostly to BANKS !!

Yes the rolling stock was given away BUT the majority of it was old and decrepit and was subsequently replaced by the ROSCO's with newer more modern trains which costs a few quid what they charge the operating companies reflects that it is just a shame that it is set up so that franchisee's can't buy their own trains

Nevertheless the cost of operating the tracks i.e. Network rail has increased considerably over the last 15 to 20 years since privatisation

Caveat Emptor.

These companies all chose to run rail franchises, fully aware of what they were getting into. If they can't make money, tough.
My heart bleeds purple p*ss for them. :-({|=

A classic radio station. 208 on the medium wave band. There were some adverts as well. I can still remember the Tampax tampons ad. Very strange I know but you could get a free sample by writing to Tampax tampons, Havent, Hants.
