Conwy taxi drivers who get nine points risk losing their council licences

TAXI drivers who get nine penalty points on their licences will have to appear before a council committee before getting their permits renewed.

Conwy County Council’s licensing and regulation committee has taken the decision in the interests of public safety.

It means drivers who clock up the points will have to plead their case to the committee, and could risk the possibility of not getting their Hackney Carriage licence renewed.

The committee states: “The council is committed to making sure the safety and efficiency of all forms of transport are improved and to ensuring people are safe on their journey home.”

And officers say a recent court ruling had confirmed that hardship caused as a result of the loss of a licence is not a relevant plea for leniency.

Terry Jones of Menyn’s Taxis in Llanrwst is chairman of the Conwy Taxi Operators’ Group which liaises with the council on licensing matters.

He said: “The operator’s group is not against this policy as long as everyone who appears before the committee is treated fairly and is given the opportunity to put their case forward fully.

“We fully endorse anything which helps towards passenger safety and are committed to working with the licensing committee to ensure that.”

What have the police to do with it if a driver is speeding, do they chase them and make the driver go faster than they should?
