Going back to waqas post on page 2 with his costings, the figures just don't add up.

I've run his figures through my costings spreadsheet and based on several quite accurate assumptions, here's the results:

Assuming an average speed of 12mph (impossible in most towns), based on my Toyota doing 23mph average on rural roads and my Range Rover averaging 48 mph on European cruising at high speed, and the speed of London traffic being 8 mph; fuel consumption of 35 mpg; fuel cost of around £7 a gallon; having 4 weeks holiday a year(?)

For a driver to earn his £33k a year, he'd have to drive a total of 50,000 miles. that would mean driving, not sitting around, for 13 hours a day, 7 days a week. He'd do 156 miles a day in those 13 hours and according to Waqas' figures of £2.40 per mile (presumably loaded miles) with running costs of 88p per mile.

His gross takings would be around £60k a year; less running costs etc. £26644 a year; net profit £33555 on which he would pay £6600 tax at 20%, leaving a take-home pay of £26400. This would equate to £8.01 an hour (when he's driving). And that is without any national insurance contributions thrown in.

I suspect Waqas figures are misleading to say the least, more playing on the assumed "below average" cab driver's intelligence to work out costs with any sense of accuracy, or plain bollox. His guy would have to be on call 24/7, 7 days a week to earn what he reckons they can. If anyone here wants a copy of my workings out, I'll happily forward them by private memo!
