As Bill has stated the technology is swaying in the direction of GPRS. It will eventually be a no brainer where GPRS coverage is reliable.
We offer a PMR / GPRS combined solution for areas where GPRS is patchy. Like many places in the UK and more so in Ireland.
The problem with a Single communications supplier is that they are all prone to outages. O2 are having a Friday afternoon outage as I write this (see paste below)
I would therefore recommend the following solution. 1. Use a GPRS portable device. It is easier to install and can be used anywhere. 2. Have a backup system when you are docked in the vehicle.
That way you have the benefit of portability and 2nd comms systems available if the primary network is off. The backup system can be either PMR data or GPRS (on a different network) Backup GPRS modems are now IRO £60.00 and a backup sim can be as little as £10.00 a year. -----
