Sorting out some insurance and I've noticed a few offer public liability cover - Do I need it?

Don't have any contract work, just a short school run am/pm which is treated as a normal job on a docket (the office like to send the same drivers each day).

Does it affect the premiums much ?

If you are taking the Public for reward, you defacto, need it. It is not optional.

Check with your insurers. Most policy's have £5,000,000 public liability cover. For school runs, our council insist on £10,000,000 public liability so we have an extra policy that covers this and employer liability because some of our drivers are on the books.

Ok, thanks.
So public liabilitys included as standard on a taxi policy. Some of the websites gave the option of selecting £1m/£5m/£10m, I guess that's what level you want not whether you require it or not then.

WRONG!! 'Most' policies do NOT include it as standard. Very few do - Aviva (through TFP Schemes do) but other Aviva policies on different schemes (Orbit, J&M) certainly do not. Sabre & KGM do not offer it. It is not compulsory, unless you're lucky enough to have a local authority contract.

£10 million was required by all the authorities until a few years ago when most dropped it to £5 million. There are still a few (Norwich & Kings Lynn spring to mind) that still insist on £10 million.

You can get £5 million cover for £73.90 per vehicle from UK Insurance Solutions, on 01353 775114.
£10 million is just over £100.

It is not normally included as standard, despite what you've been told.

The LA up here say we require a Minimum of £5,000,000 Liability Insurance but the Passenger Transport part of the Council Insists it needs £10,000,000 worth ....something damned odd there.

Luckily Westminster supply £10 Millions worth on their policies, otherwise it would cost me around £130 to pay for an Extra 5 million pounds of PL insurance just to appease School Transport.

It would seem though that more and more Insurers are charging PL as an extra these days.

You might think it is Grandad, but I assure you it's not normally included as standard.

Aviva (through TFP Schemes & Taxi Direct) offer £5 million as standard.
Highway (Liverpool Victoria) & Tradex (or Westminster) offer £10m as standard.
Catlin (through APC Underwriting) offer £5 million as standard.

I guess you might have been insured with the above for years but I can categorically state that most underwriters do not include it as standard. KGM, Sabre, Aviva (through Orbit & J&M), AXA, Equity Red Star, Enterprise do not offer this cover at all and you need to buy a PL policy elsewhere if you reqire one. QBE offer it as an expensive add-on and either £5m or £10m is available.

I'm 100% sure on this.
