Harlow’s taxi license scanner moves for wider rollout

Harlow Council is looking to expand a taxi license checking web app across neighbouring authorities to improve safety in Essex.

Designed and developed by the town hall, the Taxi Check Live! service allows individuals to check whether a cab is fully licensed by scanning a code displayed in taxi ranks or typing registration number into the Harlow Council website.

Nearly 950 Harlow residents have used this service since its launch in June, with upgrades set to expand licensed vehicle information available to the public.

Harlow Council and Firmstep, who manage interactions with the taxi database, are working with the wider local government sector to make the service available across the country.

Steve Drewett, web applications officer for Harlow Council, said: ‘The service is unique and has proven to be a real success, with user numbers growing all the time. Because it’s easy to use and always up to date, it is ideal for anyone who wants to be assured they are about to use a fully-licensed taxi or private hire vehicle.

‘Also, because the service was developed in-house by the Harlow Council’s ICT and licensing teams, with software that we are already using, we have been able to deliver it at no additional cost to Harlow residents. It’s a great example of how the right tools can unlock the data held in Council systems, to bring real benefits to members of the public,’ Drewett added.

Why not just put the date of expiry on the plate?

This is bureaucracy gone mad.

In my experience it is almost impossible to read data off license plates without getting close up perhaps this is a way forward

For punters I agree, but other taxi/PH drivers spend their life looking for such details.
