I'd probably need my money minded compadre to help with a more concise answer, but we draw in approx £2k in radio fees this is income subject to vat. From that income all the office costs including wages are paid. So in my eyes we pay vat on wages. I may be wrong, but it's how I've always read it. My treasurer reads it differently, but he would;-)

so youve 20 radios out on rent?

VAT registration is mandatory in your case (about £77,000 or £1500/wk)

Do you issue a VAT receipt for each settle/rent? (your acting illegally if you charge VAT but dont issue a VAT receipt if asked for one)

If each owner pays £100/wk inclusive of VAT you just owe the VATman £16.66/wk but any VAT you pay OUT comes out of the £333/wk your collecting, so the VAT for fuel, leccy, phones, company car leasing, etc, etc, you reclaim out of the VAT the drivers hand to you. You can place all the VAT collected in a high interest savings account and have the interest as an income.

OR....You could downsize under the VAT limits, deregister and not enter the world of VAT and keep all the £100/rent

That I can just about follow. Hence all the financial stuff I leave to him. I know what you're saying is right, because he's told me it before. I just have this daft notion that if a company is small enough the wages should be deducted from the total take before VAT is levied. But I also am aware that it's a non-starter of an idea. But I like it.

Only one driver asks for and gets a receipt.

I just have a few questions if you'd be so kind as to answer them it is appreciated.

1. What do you think a fair fare rate is. "Fair to who, the driver or the punter?"

2. If you would consider a discount for customers, under what terms would those discounts apply. "Consider, then reject"

3. What do you consider to be a 'long distance run' "26 and a bit miles"

4. If the rate for a long distance run is different to the standard fare rate what would it be "different" (or the same)

5. What do you think of having to wear a shirt and tie (clip on if preferred) for work "Trousers and shoes too"

6. What do you think a fair radio rent/settle would be
"I get to question six, and realise these are PH related"

And that makes a difference because............ :?

......................................................................................PH can charge whatever they like?

I understand that but all I wanted was an opinion to the questions I asked so that I can evaluate some things with others input rather than just my own. So if the fare rate is that of ph company does it make any difference to what would be considered a fair fare?

a Fair rate is different for everyone, for a punter 20 miles/£5 seems fair......

How so? Not even the one that's getting a reciept is VAT registered. So where do they claim back the £22 from?

This is a forum for taxi/ph drivers not punters. Therefore I would suggest I'm looking for a drivers opinion and not a punters

the guys who get no receipt for the £100/wk rent have nothing to say its been paid, ergo their end of year accounts should show 52 x £100 they will have to pay the tax on, x 19 drivers = £98,800 PA taxable at 22 percent = £21376 tax due

HMRC wont mind

I just have a few questions if you'd be so kind as to answer them it is appreciated.

1. What do you think a fair fare rate is.

2. If you would consider a discount for customers, under what terms would those discounts apply.

3. What do you consider to be a 'long distance run'

4. If the rate for a long distance run is different to the standard fare rate what would it be

5. What do you think of having to wear a shirt and tie (clip on if preferred) for work

6. What do you think a fair radio rent/settle would be

Thank you to those that have already replied :D
