Authorised taxis will be allowed to drive into Waverley station after it was proposed they were banned to prevent terrorist attacks.

A compromise has been proposed which would see Network Rail, who own the train station, authorising certain vehicles to enter down the ramp.

A taxi rank and pick up bays will be built on Market Street, East Market Street and Jeffrey Street.

Specialised disabled vehicles will also still be allowed to use the entrance, which leads straight to platform level from the road.

The Transport and Environment Committee of the City of Edinburgh Council will be asked to approve a £1m budget for the proposals next Tuesday.

Cllr Lesley Hinds said: "The Council has been working very closely with Network Rail and I'm pleased to say we've come a long way since last summer when it seemed as though access to Edinburgh's principal rail hub could be seriously compromised, particularly for less mobile station users.

"The designs the Council has produced, coupled with Network Rail’s investment into new lifts and escalators, will make it much easier for everyone to access Waverley Station as well as improving the surrounding area with resurfaced carriageway and footways and a new pedestrian crossing at the junction of Market Street and Waverley Bridge.

"With up to three taxis a minute entering the station at peak times, it's crucial that we find ways of managing the traffic on Market Street and Waverley Bridge. The proposals up for approval offer a range of measures which will do just this, as well as enhance the amenity of the whole area."

What's worked well enough for long enough seems no longer good enough, why do they insist on fecking things up at huge expense? They blame such changes on security but that's bolloxs as there would be a dozen other ways for a determined terrorist to wreak havoc at any UK station without using a vehicle.

You would think the country was awash with money they way they throw it around needlessly.

And what's to stop them using a vehicle anyway, will the entrance ramp be controlled by a barrier (one that's strong enough to prevent a vehicle smashing through it) or will it just be a sign stating 'authorised vehicles only' ?

There's two possible scenarios, suicide where they smash through any barrier to get close to the station and set off a device straight away, or abandoning a vehicle on a timer. In the first controlling access will make no difference and the latter at best will give a few minutes to evacuate depending on what the timers set at.

But like bloodnock says what's to stop them just walking in with something in a big suitcase anyway ?

Security is an excuse. This is about making money.

If current and previous Edinburgh projects are anything to go by then this 1m budget they want will be blown within weeks and they'll probably end up spending 20. Why can't they leave it the way it is? They should spend some money fixing the things that are broken instead of ruining our city.

so true, the council themselves along with the station owners are creating more mischief and mayhem than the terrorists they seek to protect us from could ever hope to achieve.

Would be surprised if Waverley goes up for Tender
