Been with AA for some years now, but I never, ever, pay the full renewal price. I phone them to cancel membership and get an immediate 40-50% reduction. Service is pretty good when I've needed it.

Do the RAC cover Taxi's? I thought not?

The same for me.

My package in years gone by usually comes to around £138 P.A. Every year they offer my renewal @ at well over £200 ! Newbies are offered a much lower rate, and I let them know that I know!! so it is usually - give me a minute sir and hey ho the lower price is offered. Having said that, this year I paid a small increase for any car that I am driving of £143 - for the taxi alone it has been well worth it.

I used to pay for breakdown assistance only and then upgrade to recovery if needed. I never took the renwal and always got the introductory discount. I used to cover each vehicle individually and paid around £12.00 per vehicle. I had 11 vehicles covered so it cost £132 for the year. I only ever had to upgrade 1 vehicle to recovery. A redal bargain.

Some breakdown firms won't cover 'taxis' ie. hackneys but will cover PH.

But I've said before don't bother taking out cover in advance, most companies will provide assistance as soon as you join. So just wait until you break down and then phone to join, all you need is their number and a credit card. Of course using this method you won't get any discount and pay the full premium for the level of cover you require, but if you have a reliable car you may never need to phone and if you do you get a years cover from that date anyway.

I carry the numbers of the main national breakdown companies in my car along with my CC details, in the 12 years I've been cabbing I've only had to phone and join once (10yrs ago for a duff battery). They (the RAC) let me join over the phone there and then and came out within 1/2 an hour.

The AA, they cover the card holder regardless of what vehicle they happen to be in. My Family cover gives me peace of mind that SWMBO or even my daughter can call upon their services in any vehicle even as passengers. 10 years Ive been with them and only used them thrice, twice for personal use and only once for the PH car.

Each year I tell them I'm not prepared the full renewal cost and each year they give me a reasonable discount as they know I'm good value for money and that they'll make more out of me than I out of them..

That depends on the cover you choose. You can cover either the person or the vehicle.

I am surprised re RAC claimed cover!

As you do - you shop around!! Having asked the RAC..........do you cover taxis - no we do not!

Spoke to a RAC rep outside "Morrisons" back a few weeks ago.........no we do not. I can only assume that some of the guys are PH (saloons) and not telling it (to the RAC) as to how it is.

The AA.

But never ever re-new, always cancel then re-join online, you'll always halve the price.

I have Merc 24 assist under warranty, and I have to say they've been impressive.

IC Insurance full taxi cover upto 7 peeps £89. Used them 3 times at different times of day/night response within an hour. Very good. Most breakdown mechanics arrive in platform trucks, so if need to be taken to garage no need to wait for truck for another hour. Basically it's an insurance firm that uses indy breakdown firms.
