Ashford driver has licence revoked

AN ASHFORD taxi driver who fought a council decision to revoke his licence has had his appeal quashed.

Mr Rofiqul Khan, an Ashford cab driver, had his hackney cab and private hire licences revoked in July last year for attempting to change a fixed fare during a journey.

In the early hours of Saturday July 7, 2012, Mr Khan picked up three women from an Ashford nightclub and agreed to drive them home to Canterbury for a fixed fare.

On the way, he stopped in an unlit lane and refused to take them further unless they gave him more money, and said they would have to walk. They refused and eventually he relented and took them to their destination.

It was also discovered that he had not handed in a wallet which had been left in his cab by a passenger, which added to the council's grounds for revoking his licences.

Mr Khan appealed to Folkestone Magistrates Court but the court has upheld the council's decision and dismissed his appeal. He was also ordered to pay £720 towards the council's legal costs.
