Huddersfield minicab driver in court after police checks


A minicab driver has appeared in court after illegally picking up a passenger.

Ghulam Chaudhry, 55, of Mead Street in Birkby, was before magistrates yesterday.

The private-hire driver admitted charges of plying for hire and using a vehicle without insurance.

Private hire vehicles can only carry passengers who have booked them in advance. If they have not done so, they are not insured to pick up passengers.

Magistrates heard that on the evening of March 2, police were at Kirkgate in Huddersfield town centre carrying out checks on taxi drivers to see if they were complying with the terms of their licences.

Miles Barker, prosecuting, said: “On seeing Mr Chaudhry’s taxi plain clothed police officers flagged him down.

“Mr Chaudhry agreed to pick them up and take them as a fare in contravention of the licence. He was then stopped and the officers spoke to him and confirmed the journey had not been pre-booked.”

Chaudhry, who had no previous convictions, said he had misunderstood what his potential passenger had said.

Magistrates fined Chaudhry £300 and told him to pay £221 prosecution costs. They also endorsed his licence with six penalty points.
