Driver cleared of drugs chargeA TAXI driver who was allegedly caught carrying 50kg of a substance police say is used to cut up large quantities of cocaine has been cleared of being involved in the drugs trade.
Robert Jones, 31, walked free from the High Court in Edinburgh after a jury returned a verdict of not proven to a charge he was involved in the supply of cocaine in February 2011.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard police pulled the taxi driver over as he crossed the Scottish border on February 23, 2011.
Mr Jones, of Merseyside, was allegedly transporting two large drums containing Benzocaine, a dental anaesthetic, in the boot of his car.
Lawyers acting for Jones said there was no proof their client was involved in the drugs trade because the substance could be used for other purposes.
