"Confusing" taxi contest could be dropped


A TAXI competition branded as “confusing” may be dropped next year in favour of a contest run by Dudley Council.

The borough’s taxis committee ran its own search for the best taxi base for the first time earlier this year, which was won by Castle Cars, of Dudley.

But other firms can also legitimately publicise being voted the best because the Taxi and Private Hire Association runs its own contest in four separate areas of the borough.

Association chairman Shaz Saleem, whose own firm Beacon Taxis was voted best taxi base 2013 for the Dudley, Sedgley, Gornal area, admitted passengers could be confused.

Taxis committee member Hayley Green and Cradley South councillor Ken Turner said: “It certainly does create confusion and this needs looking at.”

Mr Saleem said: “The council has more resources than we do, so we would be happy to have them run the competition providing it is decided on customers’ votes and not by the councillors. To have one competition would prevent the confusion.”
