A brand new taxi is set to be unveiled in July. The purpose built taxi - to be known as the I-CAB will be built by London-based Prima Vehicles LTD.

This vehicle is set to revolutionise the taxi industry. Aimed directly at the London market, the cab will be the first to provide on board internet access as well as such features as drinks dispensers and a payphone.

The vehicle will be based on the LTI TXII and will be profeassionally converted by Prima to be the most advanced passenger transport vehicle on the market. The drivers compartment will house a microwave style oven, which will enable the driver to offer a selection of hot food. Cold drinks will also be available.

The vehicle is expected to be launched in July 2005 at a price of around £36,000. There will be three trim levels, S, SE and Platinum. Each cab will be fitted with CCTV as standard and an optional coin operated juke box.

The vehicle is expected to generate much interest from the large radio circuits. It will provide first class travel for business and account customers.

Dealers have not been appointed as yet but it is believed that vehicles will be available from the manufacturer directly.

I received an email from them to my website earlier today, I've never heard of the company or the cab before. They said passenger facilities include internet access.

I think it might be a prototype that'll never see the light of day.

What do you all think?

If this is right, I'd rather pay out for a new TXII, the Prima costs an etra £6,000 and you've got to cook for them and if that internet went wrong it'd likely be expensive to getr it fixed.

Dealers haven't been appointed because Prima don't want to disappoint them with low sales.

We at Taxinews were the first to break the news regarding the new I-CAB from Prima Vehicles LTD. At this time not all details have been confirmed. We can tell you that the on board internet access is for passenger use and there will also be a coin operated juke box. Cold drinks and ice creams will also be available from the driver. The drivers partition has been equipped with a chalk board, designed for prices of snacks.

We have since been informed that the only available colour is white and that there has been an order from an unnamed radio circuit for 3 vehicles. The I-CAB will be the first purpose built taxi to benefit from a full glass roof.

Tourist maps of London will also be available from a coin operated machine in all Platinum models. These can be replaced by leaflets or maps for whichever city that the cab is operating in.

obviously thought up by a marketing man and not a taxi driver. who in their right mind is going to offer food, ice cream and drinks to the punters in the back?

Sounds like another idea that might seem good on paper but not so good in practice.

I suppose it depends what kind of work you are doing, but even with American tourists ice creams in the back doesn't seem like a good idea :?

It might be OK on longer runs, but is either the driver or passenger going to faff around with ice creams and drinks before they get going, or is the driver going to do it while driving along?

And how much ice creams need to be sold to make up the extra cost?

I wouldn't mind internet access in my car, but for me, not for the punters, so I won't be buying

We at Taxinews can assure you that this is not a wind up. I have actually test drove the Prima I-CAB. The onboard internet access is quite a good idea and clearly a good option when working in the city centres. We have been told that the ice cream was not an original idea by Prima Vehicles but added later after customers suggested it. It sounds good and certainly looks good but will it be good in practise? I am sure that drivers will only be able to offer such goods at the start and end of a journey otherwise the4 police will be waiting for them.
