TAXI: Aberdeen’s Disability Advisory Group raised concerns drivers were refusing to allow assistance dogs into their cabs.

ABERDEEN council officials have been told taxi drivers are legally bound to take guide dogs in their cars.

Concerns had been raised by representatives of Aberdeen’s Disability Advisory Group that some drivers were refusing to take the animals on “religious grounds.”

But a report from the Equality and Human Rights Commission has said: “There is a legal requirement to permit access to assistance dogs and such beliefs are not a defence against non-compliance.”

COUNCIL officials have been told taxi drivers are legally bound to take guide dogs in their cars.

Concerns had been raised by representatives of Aberdeen’s Disability Advisory Group that some drivers were refusing to take the animals on “religious grounds.”

Officers were asked to look at the issue in further detail and identify what rights guide dog owners had.

The report from the Equality and Human Rights Commission has said: “There is a legal requirement to permit access to assistance dogs and such beliefs are not a defence against non-compliance.”

A report is now set to go to the council’s Taxi Consultation Group with the findings.

Guidance has also been provided from the Muslim Sharia Council which says that “assistance dogs may accompany disabled people in taxis and private hire vehicles managed or driven by Muslims.”

At a meeting of the taxi consultation group earlier this month, several members said they had experienced instances when they were not allowed to take a taxi with their dog.

Taxi drivers had refused to allow the animals in their vehicles because they would be sitting on their “leather seats.” It also emerged that the refusal to carry guide dogs may relate to religious beliefs.

Committee convener Fraser Forsyth said he was pleased a response had been given so quickly. He said: “We want councillors to be aware of this issue because it has raised a lot of concern. I’m grateful for the Disability Advisory Group bringing it to the attention of the committee because Aberdeen is a welcoming, inclusive city. “The report will now be looked at further when the findings come before the committee.”
