From Thursdays Courier -

An association has been established to represent the owners and operators of Dundee's wheelchair accessible taxis.

More than 50 full-time drivers have joined the Dundee Wheelchair Taxi Association, which aims to give members and customes a voice.

The organisation - having elected office-bearers - has contacted both the local authority to request representation on the city's taxi liason groups.

Chairman Erik Thoresen said, "We felt we were having no voice, that we had no representation whatsoever."

Members of the trade work with various groups representing disabled people in Dundee, but are also inviting individuals to contact them with queries.

The association plans to advertise its contact information in the future, but in the meantime inquiries can be directed to Mr Thoresen on Dundee 621275.

This just shows how the council has divided the trade still further. Normally its different organisations for taxis and Private Hire, but now different taxi organisations are needed as well.

Maybe it's a case that they were PH drivers, but now are cab drivers.

Thus those that pretend to represent the cab trade, are the ones that wanted those drivers to remain PH drivers.

In other words they don't want to be represented by the same people who previously wouldn't p*** on them.

there are over 160 wavs in dundee now, approx 25-35 were private hire owners now most are run by ex hack drivers maybe its a case of you are not lining my pockets anymore so you cant represent me, im currently trying to check who has the most members the dta or dwa if its called that, if the dta dont outnumber the dwa they only have themselves to blame, the owners of the 200 or so hired plates didnt join the dta because they had no interest in taxi buisness now most of the cabbies who were hiring plates have wavs and have now jumped sides, ill bet the dta dont mention that at any council meetings

not at the moment but i will get back to you by the end of the week which is when the council told me they would have the figures maybe dundee council dont have computers ?the deadline for renewing your plate passed on the 31/05/05 so it will be interesting to see if any cabbies did just give up and bin the old plate, only one individual applied for a plate at the last meeting so the numbers cant be that hard to check, maybe the new dwa will start publishing the up to date figures to help keep the cabbies informed which will be a first for dundee at least.

I think nearly all of them will either had been driving/owning PH vehicles, or driving taxis. In other words not a mass entrance of drivers, just a little shuffle around.

Interesting, but wasn't there a big hoo hah on here about another authority putting names and addresses of licensees on the internet?

Also interesting that the addresses of the taxi owners are not on there, but the addresses of the PH owners are.

Also, since they didn't get round to licensing the trade until 1998, it ill becomes the LA to now complain about unlicensed vehicles. :?

I don't really see a problem with the details being on the interent since anyone can go to the council and inspect the licensing register anyway.

A sign of the times i suppose.

The new numbers will be interesting.

There were well over 100 PH at one point, but there could well be a hundred less of them now, so that puts the 160 new WAV's in context.

The most interesting figure will be the saloon plates, they should have gone down, but theres always the 203020 factor to take into account.

Presumably the deadline for them taking up the saloon plates has passed, so is there any word of how many they actually took up?

Mr TDO, is that true Highland Council did not license until 1998 ?

Considering the fact that they impose age limits on vehicles (5yrs-saloon, 10yrs-WAV) & as far as I know have number limits, it seems they are making up for lost time

I was just repeating what was in the press release that the link was to, but it seems that it's just referring to a certain part of the council's area:

Since The Highland Council introduced the mandatory licensing of both taxi and private hire car operations within Badenoch and Strathspey, on 1st December 1998, the enforcement of the licensing requirement has been one of the highest priority issues

It's not really my neck of the woods ( ) but I think Inverness was derestricted at about that time, so presumably it was subject to licensing before the area referred to in the press release.

So unless they have rerestricted numbers since then, it looks as if they don't limit taxi numbers.
