Well i initially want to do it part time...Evenings and weekends.
I need to buy a car and obviously the other costs...insurance, badge, radio costs (and whatever else there is supposed to be in PH) ill be able to recuperate through that. I hope. Ill then decide if its something I want to do full time or not.

I wouldnt want to be in any dangerous situation. You hear the horror stories all the time.

So you'll drive all day in one job then drive in the evenings and weekends as a taxi/ph driver? You'll be in danger of becoming one of the horror stories we read about

90% of drivers are dangerous, not just tanked up punters mate, the biggest scares you will get are from other vehicles, and potholes and this weeks pump prices

Loadsa money. I'm (just) over 60 with years of no claims, clean licence etc and have to pay about £1200 a year fully comp for hire and reward.

IF you decide to come into this business, depending where you are, DON'T be tempted to undercut everyone else jut to get the work. LEARN about how to cost your business, don't just think at the end of the week "hmm, a good week, I've taken over £500". Remember it's not all yours, you have to pay the HP, fuel, tax, insurance , licence fees, tyres, repairs, cleaning and loads more you never think about. Get to find out what your running costs will be per mile, typically between 45p and 50p a mile. so unless you get well over that per mile in fares, then you're working for nothing, and you can do that in the comfort of your front room without wearing out your car.

One of the newbies round here (New Romney) advertises Gatwick £70 (168 miles round trip), Heathrow £90 (204 mile round trip), Ashford night club return £44 ( 2x 38 miles if he returns to N/R between times). No doubt he'll go broke very quickly.

I've got a spreadsheet I can send you that will work out your costs. Do you know how many miles a set of tyres will do? My tyres cost me 0.006p per mile for a full set as a matter of interest!

My new Skoda Octavia costs around £350 a month to lease, and does around 60mpg with the DSG box and 1.7 diesel.

For me, as i intend to start it off as a part time thing, I will probably buy a second hand skoda. Work a few hours evenings and weekend days to get the ball rolling and meet the costs of the taxi. i.e insurance, fuel costs, radio costs.
I think that will put me in a better position to judge if i want to do it full time or not.

You will need to work full time if you buy a car mate, or be worse off than you THINK you are now, your insurance could hit £2500 in tear one

Cant you buy monthly installments of insurance? instead of having to pay it all in one go..!

usually the insurance will want a deposit of 10 to 20 percent and the rest in installments but be warned there is a premium charged for paying by installments so the overall cost is a little higher
