I believe the police can require it to be shown on demand but will always allow 7 days to produce.

Romik, a police officer in uniform or a VOSA official certainly CAN demand to see not only your driving licence, but your vocational licence AND if driving a bus your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. With your ordinary d/l, you have seven days to produce it at a police station (form HORT/1). If you're driving a bus and can't produce your DCPC on the spot, up to £1000 fine!

There's already been a lengthy discussion on here about who can and can't drive private hire car and taxis and the conditions for driving such vehicles. I too hate authority, but at times have to abide by it. The law basically is, once a ph or taxi, always a ph or taxi and at all times can only be driven by a licenced ph or taxi driver except when going to or from test or repairs. so, if your mrs nips to the shops in your licenced car, she's breaking the law unless she is a licenced ph/taxi driver. Same applies to buses, once a bus always a bus until it is withdrawn from service and licenced differently.

You might save us all a lot more keyboard wear by looking for some of the other threads that discuss the same matters.

but if you cant prove who you are they can detail you


dont you watch police interceptors?


invariably those with no ID whatsoever have something to hide

I cant see why anyone in 2013 wouldnt have some ID on them, other than burglars, rapists, terrorists, drug dealers, muggers, child abductors, ram raiders, etc, etc

even my jogging top and shorts have safe pockets for my wallet

I just received around 15 replies from various councils around England (their licencing departments) answering a simple enough question - should a PH driver driving a PH vehicle have a badge with him at all times, working or not.

The replies were interesting. I can't quote any of those emails as I might get sued :)

Some answered plainly copying the act, others answered in a way that could be misinterpreted (exactly what happened in my case), some replied that a PH doesn't need to have a badge with him when not working.

Before I get guns pointed at me I get it, I should have a badge in the car "at all times". Now, here is another interesting thing, I asked around 30 drivers about this and ALL of them said that they had no idea they had to have badge in the car at all times, some did keep it in car all the time anyway, but at least half were well surprised :)

Was stopped just outside Kingston, Surrey (TfL/PCO) by the police doing checks on PH vehicles, including one which looked like it was out of area.

Asked for driving licence, said I didn't have it, so was asked for another form of ID (gave them an out of date college ID card, which the officer was satisfied with). Had no one on board, as was driving back home.

Was not asked for the driver's badge either. A few checks on the radio to confirm I was the registered keeper of the car I was driving, and it was correctly insured and I was back on my way in a few minutes.

Though the police officer said there's no law to carry my driving licence. however, I was advised I should , because of my job, as they said it would have been easier for them to carry out their checks. I doubt whether carrying it would have made them completed their "checks" any quicker though.

Of course another tin of worms is EU regulations :) we already been advised on those, like not to be logged for a period longer than 12 hours & 12 hour break
