Minicab driver dies and passenger fights for life after crash

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene on Twist Lane shortly before 4am this morning after a Ford Mondeo private hire taxi collided with a Vauxhall Astra.

A minicab driver has died and his passenger is fighting for her life after a horror crash in Leigh.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene on Twist Lane shortly before 4am this morning after a Ford Mondeo private hire car collided with a Vauxhall Astra.

The driver of the minicab, a 59-year-old man, died at the scene.

A 23-year-old woman who was a passenger in the cab, was taken to hospital where she is said to be in a critical condition.

The 34-year-old man who was driving the Astra suffered serious injuries and was also admitted to hospital.

Police are now carrying out an investigation and are trying to piece together events leading up to the crash.

PC Paul Hailwood from Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Emergency services were quickly on the scene to provide assistance to these people this morning, but sadly a man has died and a woman is critically ill in hospital, and our thoughts are with both of their families at this traumatic time.

“We are making enquiries into the circumstances leading up to this collision and are asking for any witnesses that saw either the Astra or the Mondeo driving shortly before this incident occurred, to contact us.”

Anyone who may have witnessed, or have information about the incident is asked to call on 0161 856 4741 or 0161 856 4745.

Person to be charge with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, and one of excess alcohol.

Should a guilty plea be entered, or returned by a jury, I suspect the sentence will be 6-8 years.
