Huddersfield driver Munsif Ali forced to find another career after being caught drink-driving

A man who dreamed of becoming a taxi driver is coming to terms with losing his livelihood after being caught drink driving

A man who dreamed of becoming a taxi driver is coming to terms with losing his livelihood after being caught drink driving.

Munsif Ali, of Woodthorpe Terrace, Longroyd Bridge, appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Magistrates heard that the offence happened at just after midnight on January 17.

Police spotted Ali’s Honda Accord being driven from the direction of Longroyd Bridge towards Paddock.

The 22-year-old had no lights on the vehicle and was pulled over by officers.

He was identified by his private hire driver photo badge.

The officers could smell alcohol on his breath and asked him to provide a roadside breath test.

This was positive and Ali was arrested and taken to Huddersfield police station.

There he refused requests to provide further samples of breath and was charged with that offence.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, added: “His behaviour was very strange, with him stripping off on one occasion. He made it clear to the officers that he wasn’t going to co-operate.”

Ali admitted he had been to a friend’s house for a drink prior to being pulled over.

There were no passengers in the car with him at the time of the offence.

Bob Carr, mitigating, said that Ali’s job explained his bizarre behaviour.

He said: “He was fearful of the consequences of being asked for and giving a breath sample as his suspicion was that it would prove to be positive.

“He always wanted to be a taxi driver and has been for the last two years.

“Now he won’t be a taxi driver for some considerable time.

“When he comes to apply for any licence for a taxi they will not look favourably upon this conviction.”

Magistrates banned Ali from driving for 12 months.

He must also pay £110 fine, £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
