My LA Forest of Dean District have just sent us all letters telling us that they are now enforcing the fitting of meters and as we re-licence we will have to have them fitted. They state that they are the only LA in the UK that do not enforce this and are only doing it to come into line with every other LA. Is this true ?
Its the wrong time surely when there is no work about to make use spend £200 ish per vehicle ?

you will probably find you will take more per trip as its easy to underestimate a fare

you dont HAVE to charge meter fare, but have to use it...

plenty on ebay at the moment, and depending on what vehicle you have you may need a transducer, that fits to the speedo cable at the gearbox.
Halda meters are quite robust mine is 20 years old and has never had a problem

No idea what the figures are - surprised that there are still yourselves and as grandad mentioned, Rutland who don't have them.

You could try calling the NPHA - they may have an idea as they do the fare league tables.

The private hire aspect is a red herring in this thread - the 76 act states;

71 Taximeters.
.

(1) Nothing in this Act shall require any private hire vehicle to be equipped with any form of taximeter but no private hire vehicle so equipped shall be used for hire in a controlled district unless such taximeter has been tested and approved by or on behalf of the district council for the district or any other district council by which a vehicle licence in force for the vehicle was issued.
.

(2)

Any person who—
.

(a) tampers with any seal on any taximeter without lawful excuse; or
.

(b) alters any taximeter with intent to mislead; or
.

(c)knowingly causes or permits a vehicle of which he is the proprietor to be used in contravention of subsection (1) of this section,
.
shall be guilty of an offence.

Having said that - taximan doesn't actually make it clear if he's HC or PH

Some Meter firms rent you the unit for something like £10 per month fitted. If there's any tariff changes it's all free.

These are the closest to you.

FOD Licensing regs

a taximeter which has been calibrated by the installer and approved by the Council.
No other taximeter shall be fitted or used.

The taximeter must be in a position so that the fare

There use to be three councils in Sussex that didn't have meters, but now there are none.

I think there is one or two in East Anglia that don't require meters.

You may have a concern about meters, but having meters is a sound way to actually earn a living and not knock the bo****ks off each other.
