Nottingham taxis to get 'eye in the cab' CCTV

A SCHEME to install CCTV cameras in Nottingham taxis is being launched today.

The idea is to make taxi journeys safer for drivers and passengers.

Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping says the scheme is one of only a few up and running in the UK, making Nottingham one of the leaders in the field.

He said: "I am convinced that CCTV in cabs is the way forward.

"The 'eye' in the cab will be a strong deterrent to abusive behaviour and criminal activities, enabling law-abiding drivers and passengers in taxis to feel protected."

Mr Tipping has contributed £95,000 to the scheme as part of a concerted drive against crimes such as assault and racist abuse.

Taxi drivers pay £100 for the cameras, which are fitted in the back and in the front of their cabs. They also have the option of paying an extra £20 for the audio element.

Phil Collinge, from the Nottingham Citizens' Leadership Group, said: "This scheme will make Nottingham a safer city – it will provide drivers with protection and passengers with appropriate assurances."

Taxi driver Mohammad Zubair added: "It will make a huge difference to confidence in my colleagues and in our passengers.

"Cabs with CCTV installed will display large CitySafe Cab stickers in their windows, giving passengers an informed choice as to which car they pick."

Well done.

Subsidised CCTV is very rare but welcomed. =D>

I bet if you really tried, you could guess where Sherwood is likely to be. Even people from Blackpool must have heard of Robin Hood.
